Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Has anyone had any result from taking maca root?
I have started it this week, to see if it will help me to ovulate.
Have you had any result of any kind on Maca Root?
Whens a good time to take it?
    Cooked or Uncooked Powder?
    How Much?
    Any other effects?

    • ANSWER:
I've tried it, as have many of our customers... but it's primarily a libido booster. I know there are some women that take it for hormonal support, so it's possible that it might help for ovulation.... but do you mean you aren't ovulating right now? If you're on the pill, in menopause, or haven't started your period yet, I would suggest against taking this (or any herb for hormonal support) until you talk to a doctor (or a pharmacist if it's the pill... they'll have the same interaction information).

That being said, you can take it any time of day. Since it can boost the libido, some people get a little boost of energy from it... nothing sufficient, but enough that it might keep you awake if you take it right before bed.
If you take it in powder form, you shouldn't cook it. High heat can damage the nutritional integrity of most herbs, and can render some of them useless.
I would suggest buying capsules or tablets of Maca if you're going to get it... they're a lot easier to get down, they have standardized doses, and you won't have to worry about the taste. Good luck!

  2. QUESTION:
How many hairs lost in a day would mean you have 'hair loss'?
Im approaching the menopause and Im sure my hair is thinning a bit. It seems finer also and there are about 6-8 hairs that come loose after hair washing or styling. Do I have hair loss???? If so what can I do about it.

    • ANSWER:
6 - 8 hairs a day is not significant. However if this is a change from what is normal to you there are things you can do. I am a 44 year old woman and am peri-menopausal. I began losing a significant amount of hair each morning when I showered. I don't know how many but I know it was a change from what was normal for me. I began taking Macafem (maca root), biotin, and MSM supllements, and I switched to Organix coconut milk shampoo and conditioner. Once a week I do a pure coconut oil treatment on my hair (leave oil on for one hour & wash out) I started these changes about a month ago and have noticed a decrease in hair loss and also have new hair growth. Hope this helps

  3. QUESTION:

  5. QUESTION:
How does a Progesterone cream work?
Isn't it tricky that you massage it in your body parts, and it helps your hormones?

Plz educate me a bit about it. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
You rub the cream on you inner thigh or inner arm or tummy (areas where you have a high number of capillaries). You rub it in like lotion.

Do expect much to get absorbed. The progesterone has trouble passing through our skin especially with the type you find a health food stores/herb shops. Progesterone also breaks down/gets destroyed easily. Even taking it by mouth weakens it due to the digestive system.

I only suggest taking the cream form when your going through peri-menopause or menopause and what relief of symtpoms. Don't use it for ttc or to maintain a pregnancy if you are low in progesterone. You can tell there's low progesterone if you luteal phase is under 10 days.

Usually OB/gyn and RE's will prescribe progesterone by suppository (vaginal) or by injection. Injection is the best way for the body to absorb it but it can be painful especially after you get pregnant and have to continue them until the 10+ week of pregnancy.

I'm on progesterone right now. I take 200 mg daily when I take it (50 mgs if by injection). With the creams, your body only takes in about 10% of what you rub in. Most creams contain 50 mg per 2 quirts. That means for every 2 squirts, you're only getting 5% into your body. Imagine how much you need to get 200 mgs.

Try taking Maca if you want to increase your progesterone naturally.

If you suspect low progesterone, ask your doctor for progesterone support. Most will give it when there might be a problems and other will have a progesterone test done around cycle day 21.

  6. QUESTION:
Are there female libido enhancers available for purchase in stores?
If so, what is it called, and where can it be found?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, Maca is good for both genders. You can find it in Health food/supplement stores. MacaSure is a brand I've taken. It is good. It is a root vegetable grown high in the Peruvian Andes. It is most well-known for its ability to restore libido. It helps restore hormone balance and can also help with menstrual trouble and menopause. I took it every morning for a month in between periods and my next period was improved as far as cramps and my other troubles. I also noticed a big difference right away after taking it (a couple hours) in my libido and ease of reaching orgasm. At first my libido was perhaps over active and then it evened out and it was still easy to reach orgasm, more easily aroused but without feeling the constant need that I did when I first started.

Maca acts quickly, but the long term results are great as well. It also has great nutritional value with lots of important nutrients.

Look at the links below for more information.

Note: There are other factors to menstrual troubles, eg vitamin and mineral deficiency. But hormones also play a big part.

Try this trust me! It is healthy and very effective.

      Good luck.

  7. QUESTION:
Will eating wild yams help you get pregnant?
Does anyone know if wild yams will increase or decrease fertility? I have been reading up on this topic, but I am finding mixed readings.

    • ANSWER:
It's not the best way, there's just not enough progesterone you get from them. Creams that have Wild Yam in them also put progesterone into the cream. You also have to be sure it's the Mexican wild yams not the type found in the grocery stores. It has a steroid-like saponins which can be chemically converted to progesterone. It regulates the female system, particularly during menstrual distress and menopause,as well as used in treating infertility. Used with chaste berry and dandelion it is an effective treatment for morning sickness.
If you're wanting a better way to regulate progesterone & also help your cm--take Maca-- it proven to improve fertility and the interesting part about Maca is that the women in Peru begin taking it at age 3 and they have the longest fertility over any other group of women. It must do something good if it causes that.
I saw that people were confussing Wild Yams with the African Yam --agida (local name for the yam tubers) . Tapioca is made from a similar tuber (the Asian one) which is from the same family. American yams and Mexican yams are not related to the yams ingested by the African village people who have the highest twin rate. Interesting, Asians have the lowest twin rate and they consume the relative of the African yam. In addition, the village with the high twin rate also ingest large amounts of Okra. So is the high twin rate genetic, from Agida (the yam tubers) or the Okra?
Grapefruit helps with fertility when ingested during the 1st 1/2 of a cycle and pinapple (especially the core) helps with implanting due to enzymes in it. Green tea (caffinated or not) is shown to increase fertilization and pg rates in IVF patients just by drinking 1/2 c daily. Up to 4 cups a day was tested in another study done by Kaiser and the rates of success increased. And they found that caffine did not reduce the conception rates. Although they did not follow the pregnancies to term and there is still question on if caffine consumption causes miscarriage, it's a good idea to stop the green tea and caffine once pregnant.

  8. QUESTION:
Anyone out there that can not work, or on disablity, due to anxiety?
I was just pulled from work for the next week by my dr. for severe anxiety. I am having trouble coping with the stresses of everyday life. I feel as though I can not tread water anymore and I am sinking. I work full time, as a mortgage loan officer, I have 3 boys aunder age of 8. My stress from home and work are piling up so that I can not seem to do anything right! I would love to stop working all together as that seems as though it would help me function much better, however, we just cannot afford it as I carry the health insurance, etc.. for the family. Any suggestions as to how I can somehow remain on disabilty until my life gets back in order?

    • ANSWER:
My anxiety was so debilitating that i took vacation after vacation leave until i ran out. Then i took sick leave and compensatory leave, man i worked the system until they all ran out. I tried anxiety medication Effexor, after the 4th day of taking it my anxiety attacks got worse, much worse. I immediately refused to take Prescriptions and opted for natural remedies that work. After i tried it i am much better and back out to work, i know i won't have to worry about anxiety again. This is what i did. After reading the book "Natural Cures They Don't Want You To Know About" by Kevin Trudeau i gained much insight into how to take care of your body and never get sick again. This is what i did to get rid of my anxiety.

      A colon cleanse
Parasite cleanse (most ppl dont know that worms and parasites causes severe anxiety)
      Candida cleanse
      Liver/gallbladder cleanse
      Kidney cleanse
P.S. Take the colon and parasite cleanse together so that while flushing the colon worms and parasites will be expelled along with them.

Now while i took the cleanses one by one i supplemented my body with something that brings the body back into balance. It's called Maca Root. It is anti anxiety as well. Here is a list of what Maca Root is good for. What doctors won't tell you is that if you cleanse your body you will basically get rid of many ailments, like anxiety, depression, constipation, dizziness, insomnia, stomach problems, acne, hair loss etc. If they tell you these things then you won't need them and their pockets will be empty. Cleansing simply gets rid of built up toxins in the body that is making you sick.

  9. QUESTION:
Is Maca Root any good for Menopause?
I have read about a supplement called Maca which is supposed to be a good substitute for HRT and Menopausal symptoms.
Has anyone tried it for this reason and how did they rate it?
Also has anyone seen any valid research on Maca?

    • ANSWER:
Nope... actually it can help boost Testosterone a bit, which is why it helps boost libido (although it's not as much as Tribulus or some other herbs).

If you're looking, the most popular natural products for hormone support would be Dong Quai, Black Cohosh, Vitex (also called Chasteberry), Wild Yam, Damiana Leaf, Motherwort, GLA (Gamma Linolenic Acid, commonly in Borage Oil and Evening Primrose Oil), and some Soy germ products. I wouldn't say any of them are a complete replacement for HRT if you definitely need that therapy, but you can certainly discuss it with a knowledgeable doctor to see what the best option for you would be. Good luck and I hope I helped!
      Good luck!

  10. QUESTION:
I was trying to concieve that eneded in a complete molar pregnancy, is something wrong with my body?
I'm 29 years old and at the age of 28 my bf and I was ttc for a year and nothing happened. All my hormone test came out normal only problem was my menstrual cycles were very irregular. I was told that I may not of been ovulating properly since my period would be 6-8 weeks apart. In February of 2011 I was told my glucose levels were slightly high and I was borderline pre diabetic so I was giving Metformin to help regulate my sugar levels and possibly regulate my periods so I can become pregnant, but the doctor gave me the lowest dose and when I researched, taking the lowest dose does nothing at at. So I researched and found a natural root called Maca Root and it got rave reviews for being a great period regulator and women with menopause swear by it. So I took the lowest dose on and off for about two months then I stopped taking it...then a few months later November 2011 I went to the hospital and found out I had a complete molar pregnancy.

I'm 29 years old and it's been over a year since my d&c and in four months we can ttc again. I've been on NuvaRing for over a year now to prevent pregnancy before the doctor says ok to ttc again and to regulate my periods.

I'm just really nervous because it was so hard for me to conceive before, the complete molar pregnancy, taking the birth control and being 29 turning 30 in a few months, I'm scared I won't be able to conceive. And fertility treatment is so expensive. I'm just worried.

Has anyone else had trouble conceiving that had a molar pregnancy but later conceived a baby?

Thanks, I need all the baby dust I can get.

  11. QUESTION:
Isit possible to get alzheimers at age 18?
I was diagnosed with premature ovarian failure(aka menopause at age 17) about a year and a half ago, i did more research and found that memory loss and alzheimers are related to it also, i am suffering from memory loss and am just wondering if it's possible to be in the early stages of alzheimers at age 18? i looked up the stages and what im experiencing is almost exactly the same as the mild stage of alzheimers.

    • ANSWER:
I personally know plenty of people who have cured a number of different sickness with just nutrition!!! A deficiency in zinc, the essential fatty acids, and the B-vitamins can cause premature ovarian failure! google for more info. Google these superfoods for information about VERY nutrient-dense foods: maca powder, royal jelly, spirulina, chlorella, bee pollen, cocoa powder, etc... (if you have allergies, you shouldn't take bee pollen).

  12. QUESTION:
My wife and I have agreed to have a somewhat open marriage. Anybody out there have similar arrangement? ?
Over the years her sex drive has steadily declined and mine is basically the same as when I was 20. We've talked about it, tried different solutions, she simply says she doesn't need as much sex. She's told me repeatedly to just not tell her if I cheat.
I feel the same way. I'm not the jealous type, I would rather not know.
We love the life we share, and I'm not possessive of her or her of me.
Are you having a similar experience? Have you had a similar experience? How does/did it work?

    • ANSWER:
I am not one of the 25 year olds that might answer this...i am 60.

my advice to you both is to get your marriage back on track.let me tell you the pitfalls of this open marriage
1..........if you go out with others, you run the risk of getting an STD and bringing it home. Even if you are not planning sex....it can happen.if you cathc herpes...it spreads easy.
2..........condoms break.....I have a 24 year old to prove that theory.....
3.......in time you will find someone you enjoy sex with and this marriage will end.
4...how can you lay in bed with your wife...thinking of your next sexual fling?

my advice.................go to an herb shop and get your wife some female hormones
she is just lacking in hormones and this is causing her to feel UNSEXIE. if she is near menopause ...the low estrogen sex drive is your cue....all she needs is to get back those assential
elements and she will not only be back in the pink but feel more energy and prevent some bad symtoms
they have female tonics that have several names.......some combos..some just one herb....but she needs a NATURAL aphrodeziac....that will combat symtoms that are coming soon to a theater near you.
herbs such as............. Damaina/ Dong qui..(.take together always as damiana taken alone is too much testosterone..dong qui levels it out for the woman....damiana is taken alone by men.
there is an herb called .........Maca........taking this, just take 1/8 of a capsule always!.....its potent...if she finds herself swinging by the ceilings lights...take a little less.
they have a female labido tincture/ toner...........and many more.
you just take about 30 drops 2 times a day of damiana/ DQ tincture........after the little bottle is gone, then you can give her 2 caps a day 8$ for 100 caps.

there is NO need for this marriage to end this way. if you were my relatives i would be there johnny on the spot with some herbs and a table talk to put this crazy idea to rest. Lets not go out and CREATE more marriage problems...lets prevent anymore.
Herbs are the foundation of medicine......they are pure and natural and safe.......they give no side affects but what they are meant to do.
so lets invest about 20$ for this mariage.......go to an herb shop, when you get there go to the lady who sells the herbs and tell her about your wife's problem...she will advise you as to what you need...free advice....and then go home together and start this marriage over again.
100 pills will last her about 2 months......at about 8$ for one bottle or 10$ for the tincture......
isnt this love you have worth the try?
I say give it 3 months.......try anything for 3 months and see if the spark can be gotten back and save this relationship...going out for sex is just saying.....
" I give up and i will date others till i find someone to replace you?"

lets nip this problem in the bud and go to an herb shop....
the herbs will take about 7-10 days to react....then take them 5 days on...2 days off.....
if it isnt quite enough up the dose.....

dont get the harsh pills that claim to enhance sexual pleasure.... horse pills....they are too strong. just get the natural caps of herbal leaves....dry leaves in caps....and make sure you realize what i am recommending.....
dont get the super harsh...pills they sell....they cost too much and too strong.!
you get the simple dry herbs.....soft natural...they are for the healing of man......no matter what you have wrong with you, the herb shop has your answer...no perscription...cheap and natural and safe...

lets get this marriage back on track and stop talking such foolishness....

get in your car....together and invest some time and effort in this.....get the love and spark that once brought you two ...back together....

    • ANSWER:
I do not have menopause, but I would like to recommend something called "maca" order some and take it- it will help with your menopause. It balances hormones and has a high vitamin and mineral content.
There are several places to get it on the web, but make sure that it is organic. If you take it only use it five six days a week and take a break or take it for three weeks a month and take a five day break from it. I take it all the time you can take it in capsules or put it in a smoothie.

  15. QUESTION:
im a 32 yr old female and i get hot flushes?
its only at night tho and they dont last long. What could it be?

    • ANSWER:
Hormonal imbalance, or a low grade fever from infection. Depends how long it's been going on for and if there are any other symptoms you might not have connected to this problem.

If hormones, take Maca. It's a herb; safe for anyone of any age to take. It's very balancing and at your age might be all that is needed to stop the flushes. Are your periods regular?

Someone answered that it might be post menopause. I doubt that very much. That is after an older woman has finished menstruating and gone through menopause. It is possible for a younger woman to go through early menopause but I am not suggesting that with such little information to go by. I suggest you see a medical herbalist and give more details about your hormonal cycle so that they can pinpoint the cause.

Another cause could be your liver. Overheating and unusual sweating especially at night can be signs that your liver needs support. A blood test might even show that your liver is fine yet it might still be the cause. Do you get hot feet? Are you a bit nauseous in the morning and don't really feel like breakfast? The liver is also involved in hormonal function so this is a good organ to treat no matter what the problem is caused by. Milk thistle is a safe and very effective liver tonic. Available at health stores.

  16. QUESTION:
Does anyone know anything abour maca root?
Hi! So I've read a lot of good things about Maca root but I was also told by someone that does reiki on me to be really careful it. I want it because its supposed to help with anxiety but everything else it helps is just a plus. so does anybody know anything about this? Thanks!!

    • ANSWER:
      hope tis helps

Three years ago I went through stress-related menopause. I had already been having problems with severe flooding, but then it got much worse. In addition, I had a lot of pain in my cervix and ovaries. Tests showed that my hormones were out of whack and the doctors recommended HRT, which I did not take. I went on various herbs for a year, but they didn't help, and for three years I hemorraged for ten days to two weeks every month. Then two months ago I started taking Maca, one teaspoon per day, and very quickly I stopped the excessive bleeding and all the pain disappeared. I'm thrilled!"

  17. QUESTION:
    How to stop hot flashes?
I have hot flashes about 20-30 times a day. I tried many things from Whole Foods, but nothing works. Estrogen therapy cannot be used. What other options are there? How can I stop these hotflashes?

    • ANSWER:
There are many remedies to help with hot flashes, some work for some women and not others. Make sure to get the highest quality herbs and supplements. You can try black cohosh by itself, Gaia Herbs or Herb Pharm extracts are the best quality. Maca root has worked for some. Vitamin E works for many, and so does progesterone cream. If you drink coffee or hot tea, you may find reducing these will help (I often get a hot flash immediately after drinking some coffee). Exercise can help. Herbs to support your liver can help, because your liver is working overtime processing all your hormones. These would be dandelion root, burdock root or yellow dock root. Dong quai and vitex are other herbs that may work.

  18. QUESTION:
What are the benefits of Maca Root Supplements?

    • ANSWER:
Maca Root is a nutritional supplement from the Andes in Peru, that has been called a 'superfood".
While it won't leap tall buildings in a single bound (or cause you to do the same :-) ), it does have a lot going for it in terms of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other plant chemicals.
So even if you aren't so bedazzled as to wear your underwear on the outside, like Superman, it can give you greater stamina, endurance, and mental concentration.
What can Peru's 'Superfood' do for you?
Maca root is used for fertility enhancement (even in animals!), male and female menopause, stamina, endurance, and hormone related problems in both men and women.

For example, men have used it for impotence, erectile problems, and increased testosterone levels. Women have used Maca Root for hot flashes, a HRT alternative, perimenopause, and PMS associated problems. It will not cause ovaries to atrophy, unlike HRT, as it stimulates the body to produce its own hormones, instead of supplying the body with hormones.

Maca Root works so effectively for both men's and women's hormonal imbalances because instead of supplying plant hormones (like phytoestrogens), it acts on the hypothalamus-pituitary gland. This hormonal pathway produces precursers to male and female hormones, as well as affecting the adrenal glands. Maca does not necessarily stimlulate it, but acts in a regulatory manner, so whether your body is producing too much or too little of a particular hormone, consuming Maca will balance your system.

      What's in Maca Supplements?
Maca contains amino acids, minerals, sterols, fatty acids, vitamins, saponins, tannins, and carbohydrates (maca root is a tuber, a starch).

amino acids - alanine, argine, aspartime, glutamine, glycine, histidine, OH-proline, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, proline, sarcosine, serine, threonine, tyrosine, and valine. Protein makes up 11 - 14% of maca root.

minerals - calcium (this is the main mineral, with about 10%), copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, silica, and traces of iodine, manganese and sodium

sterols - brassicasterol, erogosterol, ergostadienol, campesterol, sitosterol, and stigmasterol. (Plant sterols are part of the cell membrane and they are also used as the starting material in the production of steroidal drugs. They may inhibit tumour growth and regulate blood cholesterol).

fatty acids - laric, myristic, palmitic, palmitoleic, linoleic, arachidic, steric, behanic, nervonic, lignoceric, tridecanoic,7-tridecanoic, perntadecanoic,7-pentadecanoic, heptadecanoic,9-heptadecanoic,nonadecanoic,11-nonadecanoic, and 15-eicosenoic.

      vitamins - A, B1, B2, B3, B12, C, D and E

Are there any side effects in this 'Peruvian Ginseng'?
No. Maca root is not a stimulant. It does not contain caffeine like guarana and coffee, so it doesn't affect the central nervous system. It is basically a food, so is classed as a nutritional supplement in the same manner as spirulina, wheat grass and green barley, as opposed to a manufactured vitamin like vitamin a.

You might find some websites claiming they use the "true" maca root, and warning you to be careful about buying the right one. Their intentions might be good :-), but Lepidium peruvianum and Lepidium meyenii are both one and the same maca plant! The difference in name comes from the lack of singularity that sometimes occurs when botanists name plants. One refers to the species, one to the genus.

What you might want to look out for when you buy MACA Root is whether it was grown organically, without the use of pesticides, and where it was grown in Peru. Some of the growing areas in the Andes are affected by contaminated water from mines, so you could end up with mercury or lead contamination. And of course, your Maca Root should not be diluted with any fillers. Some Maca is also irradiated. This is a process that kills bacteria, but there is some controversy over its impact on we humans. Select a reputable brand with hygenic storage facilities, and that should minimise spoilage from bacteria.

After taking one dose, I read on the bottle "Especially for Men"... I am a FEMALE! Does anyone know if this will have any adverse affects? • ANSWER:
Incan Herb from the High Andes. Maca extract is found in a potent libido enhancer called Passion Rx that works within a few days to enhance sexual function in men and women.

Maca herb (Lepidium meyenii) is a root-like vegetable shaped like a radish that grows high in the harsh climate of the Andes Mountains in South America at elevations up to 15,000 feet. It is one of the few plants that can be cultivated in the harsh climate of the Andes. For more than two millennia, native Peruvians have used maca root as food and medicine, to promote endurance and improve energy, vitality, sexual virility and fertility. If you have an interest in increasing energy, an excellent supplement is MultiVit Rx which works better than maca alone.

      What the research says
Feeding maca root extracts to normal male mice increases the frequency with which they couple with female mice. Human studies with this herb indicate supplementation leads to enhanced sexual desire and may be helpful in women after menopause. This herb can also partially reverse sexual dysfunction that often occurs with the use of SSRI type antidepressants, such as Proxa, Paxil, and Zoloft. See below for a detailed review of such studies.

      Maca side effects, safety, risk
Maca root has few side effects or safety, risk concerns. High doses could lead to insomnia but as a rule maca root is quite safe as long as reasonable amounts are consumed.

    • ANSWER:
      Research review
Human studies with this herbs indicate supplementation leads to enhanced sexual desire and may be helpful in women after menopause. This herb can also partially reverse sexual dysfunction that often occurs with the use of SSRI type antidepressants, such as Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft.

      Reversing SSRI induced sexual dysfunction
I am often concerned using an herbal aphrodisiac along with prescription medications, but this study did not seem to indicate any untoward interactions.

A double-blind, randomized, pilot dose-finding study of maca root for the management of SSRI induced sexual dysfunction.
CNS Neurosci Ther. 2008. Depression Clinical and Research Program, Department of Psychiatry, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA, USA.
We conducted a double-blind, randomized, parallel group dose-finding pilot study comparing a low-dose (1.5 g/day) to a high-dose (3 g/day) maca regimen in 20 remitted depressed outpatients with SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction. The Arizona Sexual Experience Scale and the Massachusetts General Hospital Sexual Function Questionnaire were used to measure sexual dysfunction. Patients on 3 grams a day had a significant sexual improvement but subjects on 1.5 g/day did not. It was well tolerated. Maca root may alleviate SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction, and there may be a dose-related effect. This herb may also have a beneficial effect on libido.
I was not sure if the subjects were still on the SSRI medication when they were started on the maca supplement, so I emailed Dr. Christina Dording, MD in 2009 and she was kind enough to reply, "Thank you for your email. Subjects stayed on their SSRI dose for the duration of the study." Best, Christina Dording, MD.
      Sexual desire increase studies
A human study confirms the rodent findings. Researchers at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, in Lima, Peru, performed a 12-week double blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial in which active treatment with different doses of maca was compared with placebo. Men aged 21-56 years received 3 grams. An improvement in sexual desire was observed at 8 weeks of treatment. Serum testosterone and estradiol levels were not different in men treated with maca than in those treated with placebo.
Maca root improves sexual behavior in male rats independently from its action on spontaneous locomotor activity.
      J Ethnopharmacol. 2001.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of acute and chronic Maca pulverised root oral administration on rat sexual behavior. Sixty male sexually experienced rats (20 group) were daily treated for 15 days. Both acute and chronic oral administration significantly improve sexual performance parameters in male rats.

  30. QUESTION:
what are the possible medical uses of maca root?

    • ANSWER:
      Hormone Regulator
Maca has been found to be a natural way to stimulate the body's metabolic rate by increasing the function of the endocrine system that regulates hormone production, resulting in the body having more energy, researchers at Stanford University report. This increase in hormone production can be an effective treatment for many hormone-related disorders, such as infertility, low adrenaline production and low sperm count.

      PMS-Menopause
Taking maca supplements is an effective way to inhibit the symptoms associated with PMS and menopause, according to researchers at Health Guidance.org. They say women who use the herb for these conditions report a drop in the number of incidents of hot flashes, night sweats and mood swings associated with PMS and menopause.

      Muscle Growth
Researchers at Health Guidance.org say that athletes who take maca supplements have found it to be superior to the use of anabolic steroids for increasing muscle mass. Unlike steroids, maca is a naturally-occurring plant that contains no chemicals or other compounds that can interfere with the normal production of hormones in the body.

      Osteoporosis
The maca root contains more calcium than milk, and the high levels of calcium can help slow the weakening of bones associated with osteoporosis, say experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation. They recommend a diet containing a high level of calcium as a way to minimize the weakening of bones associated with osteoporosis.

Are any you going through menopause, and if so, how are you coping?

Well, I don't ahve any hot flash's, but I feel like I'm loosing my mind. I feel SO agitated, and feel like my life is useless. Can't make myself do what I need to do, have no interest in anything.
If you ahve hot flash's use soy isoflavones, it stopped mine 100%! It's great for woman. My mood is my problem. I got some real blahs and pooh pooh thinking!

    • ANSWER:
I was using compounded hormones but I am very tired of trying to keep them in balance. So I am off all hormones (3 weeks now). Having the occasional hot flash, a little sleepless and having to really stay on top of my moods. I am looking into Maca root for my symptoms. It really hasn't been that bad though. My joy just seems a little "dull" right now if that makes any sense. I had a total, abdominal hysterectomy in January of last year. Check out www.hystersisters.com. It is great for info and support.

  32. QUESTION:
I am worried ; sore nipples?
I have sore nipples. I dont go running, I finished my period over a week ago and i've never had this before. I'm 48yrs old, think i'm going through the menopause, and have overactive thyroid . Could this have anything to do with it ? Is there anything else that can cause this and is there anything i can do to prevent it? There is nothing visible there and they have been sore for a week now.

    • ANSWER:
At 48 you are getting close to menopause (avg age is 51) which means that right now you are going through premenopause. This is the time when your hormones go crazy and you might feel like you are on a roller coaster with your symptoms. Your estrogen might be too high, causing your symptoms or your progesterone too low right now.
This could be a good time to try some hormone balancing herbal remedies such as Maca or Licorice (the herb, not the candy!)
Good luck, it will bet better.

I cant seem to tolerate fake estrogen such as the patch, or birth control pills. Ive tried Maca root also. I was wondering if anyone knows about drinking Soy milk to bring my levels up. How much soy milk should i drink a day. are there any dangers in doing this etc. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Have you been checked for premature menopause? The best form of estrogen is the gel. It offers an even delivery which irons out side effects. If your estrogen is low you should have testosterone, progesterone and DHEA checked to give a full profile.
Soy milk won't harm you but some types contain a high level of sugar which could disturb your gut. Also contraindicated for people with a thyroid problem
Ideally you need referral to an Endocrinologist as you would need to ingest gallons of soy daily to have an effect.

when i was just 21 years old i used to do masturbation 3to 4 times a day. beacause of this habit i lost my confidence now when i come in contact with lady i my penis do not erect properly plz guide me

    • ANSWER:
perhaps the most common form of anxiety that results in erectile dysfunction is ‘performance anxiety’, an anxiety that is a direct result of demands upon an individual to participate in sexual intercourse.

This problem is generally most keenly felt by those who have had some problems in the past that are now making them lose their confidence in their ability to successfully engage in intercourse when called upon to do so. Hence, they become tense and anxious at the moment when they most need to be relaxed and confident, and their performance is adversely affected in exactly the way that they feared it would be.

While there are many herbs that are known to have stress relieving qualities it is unlikely that any of them are going to be effective in this particular situation.

Finding a suitable answer to a performance anxiety problem is first and foremost is going to be dependent upon your circumstances and situation.

For example, if you have a regular sexual partner with whom you have a great deal of understanding, then it is likely that you will be able to sort out the problem between you. If you have no regular partner like this, then it may be necessary to seek external counseling for this specific cause of impotence.

Before doing so however, it would certainly be worth trying supplements that are rich in adaptogens such as ginseng, maca and schizandra berries. They relax the body while energizing it, and being relaxed while also being energized could help anyone suffering from a performance anxiety problem.

You could also try aromatherapy or yoga and meditation, these has been proven to relax.

  39. QUESTION:
    Does Maca really work?

    • ANSWER:
      WHAT EXACTLY IS MACA ROOT?
Maca is a root that grows in the high mountains of Peru. Rich in nutritional content (potassium, and higher levels of calcium than in milk), it is a natural hormonal balancer which provides great health benefits for both, men and women.

Due to its high nutritional value, it is not only popular as a sexual libido enhancer and menopause symptoms savior, but also greatly affects energy, stamina, depression, memory, and more.

As Beth M. Ley, Ph.D. states on her book Maca Adaptogen & Hormonal Regulator: "Some researchers note than when the body is well-nourished and balanced (in homeostasis), overall health improves, libido rises and depression abates." pg. 15 (Handbook available here!)

WHAT WILL MACA DO FOR YOU?
      Sex & Libido
Maca is recommended for fertility problems, sterility, and other sexual disorders. However, in Peru it has long been known as a potent APHRODISIAC. Research has proven that it acts on certain areas of the body that produce hormones and energizing substances, which enhance libido and increase virility.

It is also often compared to Viagra®; however, peruvian maca does not alter circulation. Its amazing libido booster is a result of completely natural hormonal balancing. It is a safe natural product that will improve your marriage, love and sexual life by boosting your libido and stamina, and by producing a general sense of well being!.

      Energy/Stamina
Athletes around the world are starting to notice this root. It is in fact, a great source of energy. Research proves that as a result of hormonal balancing it also supports and helps restore the adrenal glands, which produce adrenaline . So, if you are looking for a healthy and nutritional product to boost your energy and improve endurance, maca is definitely for you!.

      Menopause Symptoms
Are you going through uncomfortable mood swings and frustrating hot flashes? Are you having sleep difficulties? Maca is a natural and healthy alternative to dramatically ease your symptoms during peri-menopause, menopause, and post-menopause.

Low or High levels of estrogen are a common problem to many women, which bring frustrating consequences to their health. Maca root will dramatically fix these problems. It acts as a hormonal regulator that will bring your body to its proper balance. As a result, it will alleviate menopausal and painful menstrual symptoms. What's more, it will increase your energy, reduce your stress, and even help you overcome depression. Get rid of hot flashes now! You won't be disappointed; all benefits are achieved in a very healthy way, and are only a result of natural hormonal balancing.

      The peruvians swear by it!!

  40. QUESTION:
Basal Temperature still low - Not Ovulated Help?
Getting worried, normally as regular as clockwork. I expected to ovulate on the 13th Nov - still waiting. AF was due 25th Nov - no sign. This is my second month of temping - ovulated last month.

Really worried, am in my early 40's. Would I get some sort of warning before menopause? Petrified.
I was using the clear blue fertility monitor and I was getting peaks on that all the time, so am hoping I actually ovulated, but who knows. I won't be pregnant as my temps are far too low, they are the same as pre ovulation temps of last months. Besides your temps are about 37 degrees celscius if pregnant. That's the beauty of temping, you won't waste your money on tests.

    • ANSWER:
As this is only your second month of temping I don't think you have enough months charted up for you to be able to tell what your 'normal' pattern is. Our bodies do not always work like clockwork! hehe I would think 40's a bit early for menopause? Of course your doctor can do blood work and check you out for that - I can't tell you that!
Maybe you are already pregnant? - Have you taken a test?
I know maca is a natural herb that helps you ovulate!

  41. QUESTION:
    what is maca?

    • ANSWER:

  42. QUESTION:
    Black Cohosh for Low Estrogen?
Im 21 and have a hormone imbalance, Very low estrogen levels that my doctors said if she didnt know any better she would say i was in menopause. I cant seem to tolerate fake estrogen such as the patch, or birth control pills. Ive tried Maca root also. I was wondering if anyone knows about taking Black Cohosh. I get very bad menstrual cramps to the point that i cant get out of bed and i take vicodin for 3 days. Its horrible upper leg cramps. Are there any side effects? Ive heard it only help for a short period of time but im desperate. Thanks In Advance.

    • ANSWER:
Yes, Black Cohosh is one of several herbs that are very beneficial for hormonal balance in women. Some of the other herbs are Dong Quai, Vitex (also called Chasteberry), Wild Yam, and Damiana Leaf... but there are other non-herbs that help hormonal balance as well.

Maca is actually for helping support Testosterone production, so that wouldn't help for low Estrogen. I would suggest trying any combination of the ones I mentioned above and they should help you quite a bit... but you may want to start with one or two at a time to see which ones help the most. Good luck and I hope I helped!

  43. QUESTION:
    Amenorrhea in Teenager?
My 17-year-old daughter has not had her period for over a year, and I believe she is beginning to show other signs of a hormone imbalance, such as a flushed appearance, spider veins on her legs and face, and a crawling sensation on her face. She is also stressed much of the time. Would remedies like black cohosh, vitex, maca, or dong quai help restore her period and alleviate other symptoms? I know that these herbs are typically used for menopause, but I have read online that they are sometimes also used for teenagers with hormonal imbalances. Thank you.
We have a doctor appointment set up, but unfortunately they weren't able to see us for another three weeks and I wanted to see if there is anything we could do in the meantime. She is naturally thin but eats healthily, and we do have a family history of irregular periods. Thanks for the advice.

    • ANSWER:
If she is flushing (possibly caused by hot flashes), and getting formication (crawling sensation--a classic symptom of menopause) then you need to get her checked out by a doctor. Not having a period for more than 6 months can be bad and permanently affect bone density. There are many possible reasons for the amenorrhea, but the menopause symptoms make me worry about ovarian failure. If that is the case (and it's rare), then she needs to get on hormones immediately, not herbs, or face health consequences.

  44. QUESTION:
    Why am I so depressed???
I am 56 years old. I hav gotten through menopause 3 years ago. I look really great for my age. I have very good skin and nice curves, not too heavy. You would think that the hormones would be there to help me have energy TOO! I have energy but I keep looking at very old people and ENVYING THEM SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO MUCH! That their life is almost over. The boredom and lack of zest that I have for life, even though, I am being active in my church, I love children etc. I JUST FEEL SO BLAAAAAAAHHHHHH! What is this? I am taking maca root that did help until I was unable to get he untouched whole herb as before. They force you to buy the gelantinized b/c they add the starch back to the whole herb that they take out when they gelantinize the other. Can you understand what I am saying? THEY GET YOU ALL PRIMED UP WITH GOOD STUFF AND THEN THEY RUIN THE QUALITY OF ALL OF IT! Maca Root by the way, if I could find a good supplier that didn't charge you an arm and a leg, is DARN GOOD STUFF!
The added starch they take from the gelantinized maca is added back into the whole herb. I can hardly believe that they can get away with that. I think they do it to discourage anyone from wanting the whole herb so they can push the gelantinized. It has a longer shelf life.

I can tell that the gelantinized does not have the same kick as the original maca root by the company that I first loved-but they got cheaper quality. Imperial Maca Root, one company name is "thehealthyalternative" Surely some of the companies have not gotten so GREEDY!
I do exercise well every day with my husband. That does seem to help. I am very conscious of eating a healthy diet. I have been praying more wholeheartedly and have stepped up my exercise-this has helped quite a bit. I have taken these products that you speak of and I do remember they helped tremendously. Thank you so much for your answer in reminding me.

    • ANSWER:
Do you have insurance? You need to go to your physician to have a check up. Be sure that you are eating properly, getting quality exercise every day. Or perhaps natural is the best way to go... Vitex is a good supplement to make sure you are getting enough progesterone. And dim plus by nature's way is good to balance your estrogen, ridding your body of xenoestrogens.

  45. QUESTION:
Celery , eggwhites and spunk ?
does eating celery improve quality/quantity of spunk ?
in pornstar peter north's interview he said that eating celery and eggwhites improved the amount of spunk he produced.
does any1 know of any food/drinks or supplements/vitamin pills that increase the qualty/quantity of spunk ?

    • ANSWER:
Vitamins C and E, as well as other agents such as pentoxifylline and allopurinol are known to have antioxidant activity. Reactive oxygen species are found at high levels in up to 40% of infertile men, whereas they are virtually never found in the semen of fertile men. Seminal fluid is known to be very rich in antioxidants, and removal of seminal fluid has an adverse action on sperm viability. In addition, vitamin C can decrease endogenous oxidative damage to sperm DNA after systemic administration to men. This activity was optimally seen at 250 mg/day of Vitamin C (the highest dose tested) and 400 IU ( In ternational Units) of Vatamin E, and especially in men who are predisposed to having low seminal fluid ascorbic acid levels, such as smokers.

      Try this;
Maca supplements have been used for a variety purposes, for both men and women. Maca relieves the symptoms of PMS and menopause, including hot flashes and night sweats. Men have used it to enhance fertility and sexual function. Men and women find it significantly boosts libido and sex drive. Maca has been used as an alternative to anabolic steroids among athletes because it has no chemicals that interfere with or over-activate normal endocrine function.

If you add zinc to this along with vit E and C you can expect an increase in sperm production. there is a side effect in that it can make youe testicals ache.

can anyone help me??? and also tell me other herbs that might help. thank you so much....

    • ANSWER:
1.Vitex ( Chasteberry ) - Low levels of progesterone are believed to contribute significantly to menopausal symptoms. The ability of vitex to increase the secretion of luteinizing hormone which raises progesterone levels is the likely mode of action. Physicians in Europe commonly recommend vitex for the treatment of hot flashes.

2.Maca - Maca is usually taken several months before symptoms subside.

      3.Soy Isoflavones (genistein, daidzein) -
The North American Menopause Society suggests that soy isoflavones can also be a natural alternative to estrogen replacement therapy for relief of mild menopausal symptoms. It may help offset the drop in estrogen and regulate its fluctuations that occur at menopause. Many women have reported a reduction in their hot flashes and night sweats when they regularly consume soy foods, such as tempeh or tofu.

4.Vitamin E, at a dose of 800 IU per day, is modestly effective in reducing hot flashes, on average cutting the number by one per day. Vitamin E is worth trying because it is safe, inexpensive, and has demonstrated efficacy.

  50. QUESTION:
    consecutively missed periods?
    Hello-
I had missed my period for about 5 months and then i went to the doctor and got thyroid pills because my levels were WAY off- so 6 days after i took the pill, my period came. That was August 13th. Now I have had no period again- i was certain that it was that thyroid wasnt just right yet- but i had the levels tested and they are normal. We are TTC but i keep getting negative tests. My breasts are aching- but not to the touch. Is that awkward for pregnancy? or what else can be causing my period not to show. we have been trying to conceive since February . I am 22 and hubby is 25 and it is so discouraging to see our friends getting pregnant and us having no luck. I am this point where all i can do is put my nose back in a book and cry every time we take a test... it's so hard to be happy for people when they have everything you want. Any ideas of what can be causing these issues? I have a doctors appointment on Monday but im hoping someone can give me some ideas- as im driving myself crazy. Thanks in advance <3

    • ANSWER:
I would ask them to do a sonogram to rule out an ovarian cyst (they can delay af and cause pregnancy like symptoms). If ovaries are clear and no early pregnancy is seen, I would ask to have your hormone levels tested.
      You want the E2 between 25 -27.
      Fsh--
Under 6 -- great eggs & easy to conceive
7-9-- eggs are less responsive but can still conceive in time.
10-14 -- egg quality and quantity are low. Difficulty getting pregnant.
Over 14-- Very low pregnancy rate.
The higher fsh is, the closer you are to menopause.

Fsh level vary from month to month so two test (taken during 2 separate months) are recommended. You also go with the highest test result. I know of women who have conceived with over 20 fsh levels. The risk of miscarriage is high for them though.

Progesterone should only be tested after ovulation.

Prolactin can be taken at any time and should be low.

Glucose should be done while fasting.

You may just need to be placed on the pill for a few months to get your body regular again.

Maca is a great herb if you have an imbalance with estrogen and/or progesterone. The Peru women take it and have the longest fertility years. Don't take if you are taking hormone medicines.

Start taking a multi vitamin if you aren't. Prenatals don't have the minerals that you need for fertility. Centrum is a great one due to everything it has in it. Folic acid prevents spinal bifida.
